Retouching involves a range of techniques, from correction of the size, the resolution, tonal adjustments to the change of background. You may get an old, distorted photograph and you need to add details into it. You may need to smoothen the skin surface. Most of the time you have to change the tone of the image, using level commands of Photoshop.

I have got the photograph with incorrect tonal balance. I cropped the picture according to my requirement and started working on it.

In the beginning, you can use Auto commands where the software automatically adjusts the tonal balance. But at an advanced level, you must have full control over the commands you are applying. Beside, you have several options to achieve the best output. You must be well versed with all the tools, so that you can choose the best suited for the current photograph. You can use blending modes along with tonal balancing to get the desired results.

The next step is to change the dress color. Here, I have used Hue Saturation with adjustment layers to get different colors. You can try different options. But before that, the perfect selection of the object is the most important aspect of this job.

Changing the background is another popular technique, and selection plays an important role here again. You must be familiar with the working of layers for this type of work.
